A Shot to the Heart

image

The heart: An amazing organ that beats approximately one hundred thousand times per day! As we wrap-up “Heart Month” I’d like to shed a little light on a topic that make my blood boil: Statin Drugs.

Cholesterol medications are taken by one in four Americans, ages 45 and older. There are roughly 127 MILLION Americans over age 45 on statins alone. They are the #1 selling prescription drug in America. In the last 10 years the amount of people on statin drugs has dramatically increased. But what if Cholesterol wasn’t the problem? What if cholesterol had virtually nothing to do with Cardiovascualr disease? More over, what if statin drugs were doing MORE HARM than good?

That seems to be the case. Dr. Oz did a controvertial episode suggesting everything we know about cholesterol is WRONG. You can see that video here.

So on top of the fact that statin drugs are worthless and have very little to do with lowering your chances of Cardiovascular disease, it seems more and more research is emerging pointing to the dangers of these drugs. The latest research found here reveals that more frequent statin drug use is associated with accelerated coronary artery and aortic artery calcification, both of which greatly contribute to cardiovascular and all-cause mortality.

What is perhaps most alarming about this new finding is that statin drugs have already been shown to significantly increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, prompting the FDA on Feb. 27th, 2011, to add “diabetes risk” to the warning label of all statin drugs marketed in this country.

Wait, so not only do statins likely induce type 2 diabetes in susceptible populations, but they also ACCELERATE the cardiovascular complications associated with the disease? I thought statins are supposed to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, not accelerate it…

What to do: Well if you watch or read more of the Dr. Oz episode the Doctors state the most important tests to get to assess the real risk of cholesterol and heart disease. It’s called the particle size test. Google it.

What else? How about getting off your butt and exercising! Studies show that high intensity exercise for just 12 minutes/day is far more beneficial for weight loss than that boring “cardio” of 45 minutes on the treadmill. And the fact is those closer to their ideal weight are far less likely to develop heart disease. If you don’t have 12 minutes/day to exercise, you’re doing something wrong in your life!

What foods can help reduced cardiovascular disease? FAT! Healthy fats like cod-liver oil, sardines, almonds, cashews, walnuts, salmon, chickpeas, and barley…to name a few.

If you know someone on a statin drug please share this information with them, and expose them to the peer-reviewed and published research that already exists on potential naturals alternatives: My friends at GreenMedInfo have put this together.

Is your “Check-Engine” light on?

Image

What do you do when your check engine light comes on?

A). Put some new gas in your car?

B). Remove the exhaust pipe?

C). Pour mustard gas over the distributor?

D). Put a piece of duct tape over the light?

E). Figure out WHY the light came on

I sure hope you chose E! Most of us would even think of any of those as an option. Yet every day, millions of Americans try to cover up or treat their symptoms by popping pills, removing pieces, or poisoning themselves. That seems a little strange to me.

Yet we live in a fast-paced, quick-fix society. Instead of finding the CAUSE of our problems we like to ignore them and pretend like everything is ok. And the truth is, most of us take better care of our cars than we do of ourselves!!!

It’s not difficult to be pro-active with your health. instead of ignoring your body or looking for ways to cover up your symptoms, take control of your health. Stop thinking about what you can put in or cut out and start thinking about how to take care of what God has given you.

God gave us the gift of life. It is up to us to give ourselves the gift of living it well!

Take action and seek help! Don’t wait until it’s convenient or until it’s too bad!

The “C” word

I’m walking around town with my beautiful fiance in my “Cancer Killer” t-shirt and I get all kinds of crazy looks. I’ve seen people whisper, stare, and walk in the other direction. At first I thought they were all amazed by her beauty…but then I realized, it was the shirt!

The “C” word gets people emotional. Everyone now-a-days knows somebody affected by cancer. And when we hear that word a certain level of fear creeps into our souls. I think that’s because of the association people make with cancer like: sickness, death, chemotherapy, and radiation. That’s because we have all been programmed to think that way. We’ve been BRAINWASHED into thinking the only road that follows cancer is sickness, death, chemotherapy, and radiation. Those are the treatment options 95% of the time. But did you know that 75% of the oncologists polled said that if they or a family member were diagnosed with cancer that they WOULD NOT do chemotherapy?

Yeah…that’s scary!

A recent article published in Cancer Epidemiology,  Bio-markers and Prevention showed that long term use of statin drugs more than double your risk for breast cancer.

Enough is enough! Conventional Medicine is falling short and the only reason there is no widespread CURE in medicine is because there is no MONEY in finding a cure. There’s too much money in chemotherapy and radiation for there to be a new cure.

The truth is, THERE IS A CURE! It’s called: Getting to the cause. Find the cause of the cancer (or insert other sickness/disease here) and you’ll find the cure. Remove the cause (usually a sick body/person/organ(s)) and you have your cure. It’s just that simple.

To learn how to get to the cause, go here: http://www.beacancerkiller.com/

The right way to exercise

20130901-233814.jpg

I get asked all time what kind of exercise is best. And no I’m sorry, but “chasing your kids around” does not constitute as exercise. And neither does “I have a tough job.”
If you heart rate isn’t elevated to a certain point for a specific amount of time then it doesn’t count! So does that mean you have to spend hours in the gym? What’s the best kind of exercise?

Lets face it: nobody enjoys running on the treadmill for 45 minutes. The Elliptical is no different. And if you ride a bike for 45 minutes you may other problems.

According to research, the high intensity short duration “Burst” training is the BEST type of exercise for just about everyone. Whatever your fitness goals are; lose weight, build muscle, train for an upcoming poker tournament, the high intensity route is the way to go!

But wait, this maybe the best news yet: you can all the benefits of other types of exercise, even more, in just 12 minutes per day! WHHHAAAATTTT?!?!?!?!

By maximizing your intensity and efforts, you can burn fat for up to 36 hours POST workout. This is called the “after-burn effect” and this is great news for those trying to lose weight. By getting your heart rate up to an optimal rate during exercise, your bodies metabolism is kicked into high gear and stays elevated for an extended period of time. This increases lean muscle strength and healthy hormone response. It also has positive effects on cardiovascular health, memory, mitochondrial production and efficiency, and brain function!

Unfortunately, with the classic slow-paced cardio, your heart never makes it to this point and therefor once you turn that machine off, your metabolism slows down quickly. Not only that, but depending on how long your cardio session was, you can also put your body into a catabolic state. This state is also referred to as muscle wasting. By stressing your body during the 45 minute run, cortisol levels increase and growth hormone levels decrease. What does that mean? Lets take a look at the damaging affects of prolonged increased cortisol levels:

Cortisol increases: blood sugar, stress, abdominal fat, cholesterol, acidity in the blood, fat storing, and appetite.
Cortisol suppresses: fat burning, exercise recovery, cognitive function, thyroid function, bone density, and lowered immunity

There are many programs and studios doing this high intensity training: most notably cross fit and orange theory fitness. There are also the DVD versions you can do at home including Insanity, MaxT3, and 10 minue trainer. You can choose which one you like the best. They all have some pros and cons. I’m a big fan of MaxT3 and insanity. MaxT3 is very short (only 12 minutes/day) and the results are amazing! Insanity takes about 45 minutes and is no slouch either! You can also add in some treadmill, elliptical, or bike work but it needs to be in that high intense intervals.

Whatever workout program you do committing to it is the most important thing. Get on a schedule/routine and do it at least 3 times/week. Dedicate time to exercise and ONLY exercise. Leave you smartphone in the car, minimize chatting to others, and stay focused!

God Bless!

Gone Are the Days…

Gone are the days when men take their hats off in a public building. Gone are the days when you have to go to the public library and rent out a book just to learn about history. Gone are the days where a single Chiropractic adjustment can clear out interference in a persons body and that person can be well… Wait…WHAT? Where did that come from? Let me elaborate. This is a health blog. And before you click away, take your finger off the mouse and read on!

So much new information, new habits, new technology, new everything; Has led to a society of Subluxated, fragmented, disease-ridden, sad people. For those that don’t know, the word Subluxation refers to “interference” in the nervous system that disrupts the ability of the your brain to effectively communicate with the rest of the body, or that part of the body that is subluxated.

Yesterdays Chiropractors (I mean early 1900’s) simply adjusted the spine. Many of them in fact only adjusted one bone! Yet person after person was getting well, being “cured” of sickness and ailments, news was spreading like wild-fire, and Chiropractic was growing faster than medicine! But the birth of technology and new innovative ways of growing and manufacturing consumer goods (food, water, etc…) has led to a society of fast-paced lifestyle. The “grab-and-go” mentality has taken over our culture. We live in an age where having everything you could possibly ever need on your PHONE isn’t even enough. If there’s something faster, we want it. We want our information now and we’re not going to wait for it. This on-the-go lifestyle has lead us to neglect some of the basic principles of health. We don’t have time to cook, we don’t have time to exercise, we don’t have time to meditate or sleep more or pray…

Unfortunately, this lifestyle has lead us to more sickness, more suffering, more disease, more surgeries, more hospitalizations, more bankruptcies, and more deaths.

Take a step back and think about how much time you actively put into promoting health. How many hours per week do you spend exercising? How often do you cook at home? How many hours do you sleep each night? How many hours do you spend growing your relationship with God? When was the last time you detoxed, fasted, or cleansed?

The best part of all this…YOU DON’T HAVE TO SPEND MULTIPLE HOURS PER WEEK ON YOUR HEALTH!

You can exercise in MINUTES per week and get better results than those that spend hours on the treadmill. You can grow your relationships in MINUTES per week. You can cook healthy meals in MINUTES per week. The can detox or cleanse in MINUTES per week. The trick is learning how. How can we MAXIMIZE our time and efforts and get on the right path to health? Because the truth is: either you’re moving towards health or sprinting towards disease.

Maximized Living has figured it out! Following the 5 Essentials of Health are quite simple once you learn and master them. I’ll admit it may not be easy to master them but now that I have I’m healthier, fitter, happier, stronger, more energized, and better than ever!

Those who don’t find time for their health must soon find time for disease.

Everyone know eating well and exercising are important essentials to your health. But if you’re only doing those 2, even if you’re 100% with those 2 essentials, you’re still missing 3 vital essential components to your health.

Get on the right path. Find a Maximized Living Doctor near you and take control of your life and your health!

The whole “whole wheat” thing

I’m hoping by now most of us are aware of the dangers associated with wheat and gluten. But there are still some unknowns and confusion so lets clear the air!

Wheat is bad. Gluten is bad. Stop eating it.

Satisfied? Yeah I didn’t think so. Lets elaborate:

First off wheat is highly processed and far from its natural state by the time it’s made into food. If you ask any Baker that’s been in business over 15 years they will tell you they NEVER used to use Gluten in their bakery. But because of how wonderful it is (to farmers, manufactures, and bakers) it’s used in high quantities now-a-days. The discovery of Gluten is old (older than you, and your mom, and her mom, and even her mom). But the use of gluten in our grains has become hugely popular in the last 15 years.

Wheat raises blood sugar levels, causes immunoreactive problems, inhibits the absorption of important minerals and aggravates our intestines. And much of this may stem from the fact that wheat simply ain’t what it used to be. Let’s elaborate a little more…

Hybridized and Genetically Modified Wheat

Today’s wheat is a far cry from what it was 50 years ago. Back in the 1950s, scientists began cross-breeding wheat to make it hardier, shorter, and better-growing. This work, which was the basis for the Green Revolution — and one that won U.S. plant scientist Norman Borlaug the Nobel Prize — introduced some compounds to wheat that aren’t entirely human friendly. Genetically altering wheat was a high priority task from Monsanto to market their “Round-up Ready Wheat.” As they did with Corn and Soy, altering the DNA of wheat meant farmers and manufacturers were able to produce more, longer lasting products. Which is great for them, but not so great for us.

As cardiologist Dr. William Davis noted in his book, Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health, today’s hybridized wheat contains sodium azide, a known toxin. It also goes through a gamma irradiation process during manufacturing. But as Davis also points out, today’s hybridized wheat contains novel proteins that aren’t typically found in either the parent or the plant, some of which are difficult for us to properly digest. Consequently, scientists now suspect that the gluten and other compounds found in today’s modern wheat is what’s responsible for the rising prevalence of Celiac disease, “gluten sensitivity,” and other problems.

LEAKY GUT:

It’s vastly more complicated than this but let’s illustrate: Everything we eat gets digested. Some foods begin digestion in the mouth (simple carbs) others take longer in various different parts of the digestion process (stomach, small and large intestines). Everything is broken down into tiny little particles. Think of a grain of salt. The gluten, however, cannot be digestested into tiny particles because your digestive system may not be able to break it down. It’s stubborn. So instead of being digested into a grain of salt, it’s left in a much larger size. Think of a golf ball. This golf ball sized gluten particle makes its way through digestion and “leaks” out of the gut because of damaged intestinal wall into the blood stream. This causes inflammation and stress on the the cells and liver Your body, as amazing as it is, recognizes this issue and begins attacking itself.

In order to “cure” yourself of gluten sensitivities, IBS, leaky gut, or whatever else wheat and gluten has done to your body you need to completely eliminate wheat from your diet for at least 2 weeks. It’s really much easier now-a-days with all the gluten free products. But just like everything else you MUST read the labels and know what you’re eating. Just because it says gluten-free does NOT mean it’s healthy!

The Definition of Health

We talk a lot about health. But what is health? What does it mean? Are we healthy if we feel good? If we feel good we assume we are healthy. But this is a superficial lie. Two of the top three leading causes of death in the U.S., heart disease and cancer, are coined “silent killers” because generally you don’t feel the disease building up in your until later in the process. This explains how many people, including the late James Gandolfini, “feel” fine in the morning but can die of a fatal heart attack in the evening. You don’t feel these diseases building up and you may even pass a physical and get the “clean bill of health.”

But if we’re testing the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, etc… and looking for health from parts of body and not the thing that creates health, we’re missing the boat. So where does health come from? Well lets first define health:

According to Dorland’s Medical Dictionary: Health is 100% function of all cells, tissues, and organs in the body regardless of symptoms.

100% FUNCTION…

If health is about function, then we need to address function. So what controls all function in the human body? What’s the most important organ in the human body? The brain! In order for the heart to beat, lungs to breath, food to digest, a cut to heal, etc… Your brain must convey messages down through your spinal cord, across the nerves to every single cell, tissue, and organ in your entire body. And since the spinal column houses and protects the spinal cord and nerves, it might also be a good idea to check that. I believe there’s a direct correlation to a subluxation (a spinal misalignment that causes nerve dysfunction) and disease to the organ of which that nerve supplies. But don’t take my word for it. The best part of this whole thing is that it’s not my belief or opinion.

In 1923 Henry Windsor M.D., wanted to see if there was a correlation between a misaligned spine and disease. He did an autopsy on hundreds of bodies. He found out that when a person died of stomach disease they also had a misalignment in the area of the spine that controlled the stomach. When he did an autopsy on all the people who died of heart disease, again he found a misalignment in the area of the spine that controlled the heart. Again and again every one of the deaths were linked back to a misalignment in the same area of the spine and nerves that controlled that organ. Pretty cool huh?

So all we have to do to ensure proper communication from the brain down to the body and organs. How do we do that? We get our butts to a doctor trained to find, locate, identify, and CORRECT these subluxations. If you think for a minute about any symptoms you’ve had in the past couple years, check out this pic to see what area of the spine controls the organs associated with your symptoms.

Take this twice a day for…how long?

In America, when we have a symptom arise, we generally go to the doctor. Lets say you’re having chest pain. You go to your doctor, he does some testing and says “you have high blood pressure.” Don’t worry though because there’s a pill for that. He writes on his prescription pad and gives you a copy and says “fill this, take twice a day and that should get your blood pressure down.” Great! A cure! Or is it? I think we missed the part where he said how long we’ll have to be taking this high blood pressure medication for. He didn’t say. So what do we do? Take it for a couple weeks then stop? Oh no no no…you’ll be on that medication for much longer than that. In fact, the majority of patients placed on high blood pressure medications never come off!

Studying these medications can be quite hairy. I’d rather not go into great detail about all the flaws of clinical trials. I would however like to point out that the duration most medications are studied is very short term. Lisinopril (HBP medication) for example, was studies only 12 weeks before it was cleared by the FDA. 12 weeks? That’s only 3 months! Who do you know that has ever gone on a medication and stopped just 3 months after taking it? I know people on Lisinopril for the past 13 years. This drug wasn’t studied for 13 years, yet the time frame we’re told to take it doesn’t exist. This, unfortunately holds true for many pharmaceuticals. Remember Vioxx? If not, read up on it:
Vioxx info

Don’t get me wrong; There is a time and place for medicine. If your blood pressure spikes to 196/140…that’s an emergency situation and needs to be lowered. But over the next few months, lets find out WHY your blood pressure spiked. Lets find the CAUSE! Maybe you’re overweight. Maybe you eat fast food 5 or more times per week. Maybe you haven’t lifted anything besides a spoon in a while. Whatever the reason(s) lets find the cause and eliminate it.

Where to start: I’m sure we all know by now that there isn’t a lack of information out there. I’m not the first person to create a blog about health. There are more diet and exercise books available to fill the New York Public Library. So people often ask, “Where do I start?”

Well, for starters, put down the potato chips and grab some spinach. You must train your brain to think like a healthy person first. Begin surrounding yourself with healthy options. When you eat a salad think about how much better it is for you than fast food burgers. Just start exercising! If you’re one of the thousands of people who sign up for a gym and haven’t been there since January, get to the gym! Just start moving…

Once you start to re-program yourself to think like a healthy person, you’ll make healthier options. Maximized Living encompasses the 5 Essentials to health. I strive to be a perfect 10 in all 5 essentials:

1. Maximized Mind: Time management, stress management, adequate sleep, spiritual relation with God, positive thinking.
2. Maximized Nerve Supply: Correcting the spine and removing any interference in the nervous system to allow your body to function at its peak level
3. Maximized Nutrition: Giving the body the proper nutrients at the proper time allows for optimal cell growth and repair
4. Maximized Oxygen and Lean Muscle: Exercise allows your body to take in higher levels of oxygen and creates lean muscle that keeps both your body and mind healthy.
5. Minimized Toxicity: Toxins and chemicals surround us in our everyday lives and are included in items such as medications, refined foods, household cleaners and the items we cook with

If you work and focus on these 5 areas of your life you will begin a journey towards health and freedom and stray away from the path of sickness and imprisonment.

Using rubber mallets

“There is a wonderful story of a group of American car executives who went to Japan to see a Japanese assembly line. At the end of the line, the doors were put on the hinges, the same as in America. But something was missing. In the United States, a line worker would take a rubber mallet and tap the edges of the door to ensure that it fit perfectly. In Japan, that job didn’t seem to exist. Confused, the American auto executives asked at what point they made sure the door fit perfectly. Their Japanese guide looked at them and smiled sheepishly. “We make sure it fits when we design it.” In the Japanese auto plant, they didn’t examine the problem and accumulate data to figure out the best solution—they engineered the outcome they wanted from the BEGINNING. If they didn’t achieve their desired outcome, they understood it was because of a DECISION they made at the start of the process.

Every instruction we give, every course of action we set, every result we desire, starts with the same thing: a DECISION. There are those who decide to manipulate the door to fit to achieve the desired result and there are those who start from somewhere very different.”

We make a lot of decisions on a day-to-day basis. The decisions we make today will have consequences later down the road. Most of us choose to live carelessly by eating what’s readily available, not exercising and ignoring the warning signs. When it comes to our health, this is a poor choice. Everyone WANTS to be healthy but either you’re making choices that take you TOWARD health or your choices are taking you AWAY from health.

The choices I make may seem foreign and dramatic to some people. But because of those choices I continue to move toward health now so that I do not end up trying to scramble and fix a problem with medication or surgery later. And like the American auto executives in the story, you may look at me confused and ask, “well what do you do when you get a headache?” I would look at you and smile sheepishly, “I don’t get headaches.”

Now I won’t sit here and tell you I’m 100% perfect in every decision I make (only One in our lifetime was perfect). But I know what I put in my body will eventually become a part of me. I’m a high performance machine. And just like you would never put a Twinkie in a Ferrari, I wouldn’t put a Twinkie in my mouth. You are what you…eat, digest, absorb, and assimilate.

I don’t enjoy every minute of exercise, working out until it hurts, putting kale in my smoothie, waiting an hour for my chicken to cook, cutting up 7 different veggies, or spending an hour in the grocery store reading the labels. But it’s what I do to keep myself healthy. I do those things now so I don’t need a rubber mallet later.

If 5/6 Americans are dying from heart and cancer I’m doing whatever it takes to be that 1/6. And don’t be an idiot and say “it’s not going to be me.” Because the truth is, if you’re living the same way most Americans live; eating the same foods, not exercising daily, making poor decisions, etc… then you are headed in the wrong direction and it will be you.

God designed us all to live to 120 years old. He didn’t design our hearts to fail at 51, kidneys to shut down at 36, arteries to clog at 48, etc…

Our lifestyle has to be congruent with health. We must PLAN to have good health. Otherwise, we’re planning on failing and losing our health. Don’t wait until there’s a problem. Start living healthy now. And please don’t say something like, “well we only live once and I wanna have fun.” It’s that childish and selfish attitude that gets most of us in a crisis situation with our health and end up needing major surgery or loving in a nursing home. If that is your attitude, I’d also like you to call up the people you love most and inform them, “I don’t plan on taking care of myself now, but I fully expect you to take care of me later in my life.”

You can find more information online or at your closest Maximized Living Doctor. But honestly, the last thing we all need is more information. Either you just wasted 5 minutes of your life, or you’ll take action and do something to bring yourself closer to health. The choice is yours!

*Excerpt from “Start With Why” by Simon Sinek

So you wanna be healthy?

If I asked a room of 100 people: “who wants to be healthy?” Chances are all 100 would raise their hands. Everyone wants To be healthy; but are you really doing the right things that create health?

What are the requirements for health? Can we eat pizza and McDonalds every meal? Can we snack on potato chips and watch 200 hours of TV each week? Everyone knows nutrition and exercise are important when it comes to health. But why is it that some of us have that 90 year old relative that drinks, smokes, eats fast food, and just never seems to be sick; when others exercise 6 days a week and only buy organic veggies from Whole Foods yet are constantly battling illness?

We’re missing one key component to health. Everyone knows we need food, water and air but the truth is you could live a period of time without one or all of the those things. The TV show Survivor showed us you could live about 30 days without food, you could live about a week without water, even a few minutes without air (five if you’re Michael Phelps). But you can’t live ONE SECOND without nerve supply. Yup, Nerve supply! Your brain communicates with the rest of your body through your nerves or Nervous System. In order for your heart to beat there has to be communication from your brain telling it to beat. If the nerve to your heart was cut…the heart stops beating instantly. If the nerve to your liver is cut, it stops instantly. If the nerve to your stomach…you get the idea. Nerve supply is the one thing you can’t live without and it’s what most of us are missing health-wise.

If you’re reading this, I’m sure you know Christopher Reeve (Superman from the 80’s). If you aren’t familiar with his unfortunate story I’ll give you the cliff notes: He fell off a horse, hit his chin in the dirt and fractured his top vertebrae (the Atlas) into his spinal cord. After the accident, God bless him, he needed a pace-maker too run his heart, an iron lung so he could breath, intestinal massages to help him digest food, etc… He didn’t have a defected heart or other organs but the life supply coming from his brain couldn’t make it down to those organs. Life supply is what keeps us alive and healthy and we better make sure it’s working at 100%. The smallest amount of pressure on a nerve can shut down that nerve. It’s like turning on the garden hose and then stepping on it…obviously the water doesn’t come out as fast! In fact, the research tells us that the weight of a dime on a nerve shuts that nerve down up to 60%. If that nerve is going to my heart I want to find out how to remove the pressure on the nerve. Of course there’s a time and a place for medicine but if my blood pressure sky-rockets I’m NOT taking medications for the rest of my life. I might take them in an emergency but over the next 4-6 weeks I will be figuring out WHY my blood pressure sky-rocketed. Your nervous system carries out all function in your body so it SHOULD be the FIRST place we look. Covering up the symptoms with drugs is like putting duct tape over your check-engine light; just because you don’t see it or feel it, doesn’t mean it’s fixed.

It’s about time we start being proactive with our health instead of reactive. Don’t wait until you have neck pain, back pain, migraines, or numbness in both legs before you seek help. If you do have any of those things and haven’t been checked, what are you waiting for? If you’ve never had your nervous system evaluated then get to a doctor who knows how to do it.

Remember: information without action is dead
Either you just wasted 5 minutes of your life, or you’ll take action and do something to bring yourself closer to health. The choice is yours!

Action steps:
1. Stop eating potato chips
2. Turn the computer/tablet off
3. Get your nervous system checked find a doc here
